Citizenship in Gateshead schools
Since 2002, Citizenship has been a statutory National Curriculum subject at Key Stages 3 & 4. It is also a non-statutory element of the primary curriculum, linked with the PSHE programme. Citizenship education has been introduced not to tell young people what to think, but to help to equip them with the knowledge and skills to deal confidently with issues that affect them as individuals and as members of the national and international communities.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing in Gateshead Schools
Physical health issues are usually easy to spot and respond to, but outward signs of emotional health are more subtle. A healthy schools needs to make sure that when children/young people are unhappy, anxious, disturbed or depressed there are open channels for them to seek or be offered support, without stigma and with appropriate confidentiality.

Healthy Eating in Gateshead Schools
It is important that children have the best possible start in life and to be successful in whatever they do and a healthier, well-balanced diet is a key, part of that and may also contribute to improved learning.
Child obesity levels are still rising, eating and learning about healthier diets at school and at home, as well as being more active, can help tackle this problem. Eating a well balanced diet from childhood can help protect against diseases in later life. Children need consistent and positive messages about food. This requires school to involve parents and pupils in making a 'whole school food policy'. The whole school approach as part of the new National Healthy School Status also includes physical activity, personal social and health education and emotional health and well being.

Physical Activity in Gateshead Schools
Physical Activity has educational benefits which include enhancing academic performance. It also enables children and young people to acquire the skills and attitudes to promote a lifelong participation in physical activity. Young people
learn to work together as a team and to recognise and respect the skills of others. It contributes to young people's Personal Social Health Education and Citizenship development and in particular attitude, behaviour and attendance.
