         <title>Summer Term 2009 Update</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Gateshead – National Healthy School Programme</strong></p>

<p>On Thursday 18th June 2009 7 Gateshead Schools received their National Healthy School Status plaques & certificates from the Mayor of Gateshead Councillor John Eagle, Dr Maggie Atkinson Group Director of Learning and Children and Director of Children Services and Paul Carvin Head of Raising Achievement Service.</p>

<p>Schools who received the NHS ‘Status’ were:-</p>

<p>•	Dryden School<br />
•	Eslington School<br />
•	Greenside Primary School<br />
•	Portobello Primary School<br />
•	St Alban’s Catholic Primary School<br />
•	St Augustine’s RC Primary School<br />
•	St Mary & St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School</p>

<p>These presentations were the 5th since the National Healthy School Status was introduced and brought the total of schools who have achieved the Status to 74 – representing 86% of Gateshead Schools.</p>

<p>As part of the ‘Sharing of Good Practice’ the following schools provided a 5 minute presentation.</p>

<p>•	Greenside Primary School – PSHE theme, <br />
Drugs Education lessons and gaining the Smoke Free School Award.<br />
•	Portobello Primary School – Healthy Eating theme – DATA – Cooking Skills, Expo Chef visit.<br />
•	St Mary & St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School – Physical Activity Playground Activities and a Skipping demonstration.<br />
•	Dryden School – Emotional Health & Well Being – Enterprise Week<br />
•	St Alban’s Catholic Primary School – Emotional Health & Well Being, Pastoral Care and the Gateshead Anti – Bullying Award.</p>

<p>Schools were made aware of the new NHSP Enhancement Model to be introduced in September for schools who have successfully gained the ‘Status’.  Schools will have to complete an Annual Review to maintain the NHSP – Status criteria and select a School and Local / National Priority linked to National Indicators.  Further information will be shared at a briefing day in September.  </p>

<p>The programme on the day also included the presentation to 4 schools gaining their <strong>Gateshead Anti – Bullying Award Certificates</strong>.</p>

•	St Philip Neri RC Primary School <br />
•	Whickham Parochial C of E Primary School</p>

<p>Certificates were presented by the Mayor of Gateshead Cllr John Eagle, Dr Maggie Atkinson, and Liz Elliott Chair of the Gateshead Anti – Bullying Steering Group.</p>

<p>Nine Gateshead teachers and HLTA’s received their <strong>DCSF Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) Accreditation Certificates</strong> presented by the Mayor of Gateshead Cllr John Eagle and Paul Carvin – Head of Raising Achievement.<br />
 <br />
Two schools became the first to gain the <strong>Gateshead Schools Sex and Relationship (SRE) Excellence Award</strong>.</p>

<p>The successful schools were:-</p>

<p>•	Gibside School <br />
•	The Cedars Sports college</p>

<p>Overall the presentation was a great success with staff and young people from our schools receiving recognition for their Healthy School Status and achievements in Personal Social Health Education.</p>
